7 Reasons You Should Blog (even if you’re not a writer)

16821448686_7346aa4abd_zI love to write.  Obviously.

Writing a blog is a clear extension of that.  It’s almost too obvious that anyone who considers his or herself a writer should blog.  And they should, by the way.

That said, blogging can be useful for anyone, no matter their interests or areas of expertise.  Here are 7 reasons why you should give blogging a shot, whether or not you’re a writer.

This is supposed to be a metaphor… get it?

This is the first of a monthly series I’m beginning.  The idea is to post five writing related items I’ve found helpful or interesting over the prior four weeks.  And hopefully the whole “5 on the 5th” thing is catchy.

I’m hoping to keep this a diverse mix of actual writing (short stories, excerpts, etc), writings tips and advice, or things to actually do.

So, without further ado….

Month In Review – November

I got one step closer in November

I got one step closer in November

November was a crazy month.  First and foremost, I beat NaNoWriMo!

That’s a heck of an accomplishment for any month.

Not only did I beat it, but I ended up with a whopping 72,472 words, almost half again the required 50,000.  This averages out to a ridiculous 2,418 words per day.

That knocks my prior daily productivity out of the park.  As I calculated during October’s Review, my daily average for the past year has been around 860 words per day.

We’re pretty much there.  The fourth week of NaNoWriMo 2015 is behind us.

In fact, there are only two days left.

If you haven’t hit the 50K mark yet, then this is the home stretch for you to knock it out of the park.  If, on the other hand, you’re already there, then this is the time to finish the story up.

I’ve been going strong, and I’ve timed things out well.  While writing last week’s review, I spent a little time strategizing for the final week so that I could make the end of the story and the end of November align.

My NaNo’s progress!

We are over halfway there, fellow NaNoers, but this late in the month, the writing is getting tough. It’s easy to let the excitement carry you through the beginning, but it gets harder and harder as the grind sets in.

Stay strong.

We’ve talked about some important tools for your NaNo toolbox: Commitment and Embracing the Suck.  This week I want to talk about one more to help you knock NaNo out of the park: the NaNoWriMo community.

NaNoWriMo Week 2 Review

The second week of NaNoWriMo 2015 is in the books!

This is my first NaNoWriMo ever, and it has been quite an experience for me.

With the second week behind us, it’s time to take a look and see how it went.

I plan to continue to post a weekly “recap” throughout November, and then I will take a look back at the whole thing at the end.

I had originally planned to write this article all about my progress with NaNoWriMo, but in light of recent events, something else feels more important. Continue reading

NaNoWriMo is tough.

50,000 words ain’t nothing, and getting there by the end of the month is a heck of an accomplishment.

Unless you are lucky enough to engage in NaNoWriMo full time, it might be a bit of a strain to cram all of that writing in on top of your real life.  You know, all that stuff you do every day to keep the lights on?

Besides, writing is hard enough as it is.

Here are some tips to make it go a little smoother.
